Time to Reflect: Why the Nervous System Needs the Sacred Pause

A somatic reflection on September, the default mode network, and the quiet power of pausing.

When was the last time you actually paused?

Not the pause of scrolling through Instagram for twenty minutes. Not the pause of the commute home when your body is still braced from the day. I mean the pause where your shoulders drop, your breath deepens, and there is space to hear what is actually alive inside you.

For most of us, the honest answer is: too long ago.

We move through the year at a pace that leaves very little room for real reflection. Notifications. Deadlines. Roles. The relentless internal narrative that tells us we should be doing more, being more, becoming more. And underneath it all, a quiet certainty that we are somehow behind, somehow falling short, somehow missing something.

By the time September arrives, we have forgotten most of what we have created, most of what we have moved through, and most of what we have learned.

Why the nervous system needs reflection, why the default mode network makes life feel harder than it is, and why a circle of women moves the body deeper than solitude.

What Happens in the Mind When We Do Not Pause

There is a network in the brain called the default mode network. It is the network that runs quietly beneath everything, in the moments when we are not consciously focused on a task. It is the voice that plans, rehashes, rehearses, ruminates, and tells us stories about ourselves, over and over.

When we do not pause, this network runs unchecked. It fills the silence with worry, comparison, self-critique, and the assumption that everything is worse than it actually is. It measures our lives against curated highlight reels, against imagined futures, against the version of us we think we should have become by now.

The result is that we come to believe we are living in a harder, lonelier, more urgent world than the one that is actually here.

Reflection Is a Nervous System Act, Not a Mind Act

As a transformational coach and somatic guide, one truth I hold most closely is this. Real reflection cannot happen from an activated nervous system.

If your body is in fight, flight, freeze or fawn, you can strategise. You can problem-solve. You can push. But you cannot see clearly. The seeing that comes from a regulated body is different in kind. It is slower, softer, and more accurate. It is the seeing that recognises what actually worked this year, what quietly did not, what you have grown into without noticing, and what part of your life is no longer fitting.

This is why reflection is not a productivity practice. It is a nervous system practice.

Why Reflection Lands Deeper in a Circle of Women

Something happens in a room of women who are all pausing together that cannot happen alone.

Nervous systems co-regulate. When one woman softens, the whole field softens. Silence held together is deeper than silence held alone. A truth spoken in a circle of women who are witnessing without judgement lands in the body in a way it could never land in a journal.

There is science underneath this too. Co-regulation is measurable. The vagus nerve responds to the presence of others in a way it does not respond to solitude. This is one of the reasons reflection done in a group can move the body to places solo reflection cannot reach.

Join Us on Tuesday 8 September · Virgo Season Special

My colleague Shermine Boustany and I are hosting our next complimentary online workshop on Tuesday 8 September 2026. This month, it is called Virgo Season: Time to Reflect and Envision New Possibilities.

Together, in 75 minutes, we will slow down. We will look back at the past nine months. We will notice what has been created and learned, what has worked and what has not, what we are ready to release, and what wants to emerge next. There will be honest conversation, journalling, somatic practice, and breathwork.

You do not need to arrive with a plan. You do not need to know exactly what comes next. You just need a little space to hear yourself.

📅 Tuesday 8 September 2026 🕧 12:30 to 1:45pm UK time 💻 Live on Zoom 🎟️ Complimentary for September
